Who Is a Good Candidate for Dentures?

If you’re missing teeth, it can have a negative impact on your life. Eating the foods you once loved can become a struggle, speaking clearly can be impossible, and showing your smile can be embarrassing. Thankfully, dentures can help prevent these problems.

To be a good candidate for full dentures you must be missing all the teeth on an entire arch. If you’re not, another treatment might be better for you, but Dr. Sandadi will discuss your options with you at your consultation.  You must also have healthy gums to support your new dentures, as gum disease can make wearing them difficult due to irritation and potential jawbone deterioration could alter their fit.

Types of Dentures

There are several types of dentures available, which Dr. Sandadi can show you at your consultation. This is appointment is an important step on your denture journey. Here is a brief look at the different types available:

Partial Dentures

Having large gaps between your teeth can make chewing and speaking properly very difficult. It can also be dangerous to your remaining healthy teeth, because without proper jawbone stimulation, they can become loose, change positions, or even fall out.

Partial dentures allow you to replace multiple missing teeth on an arch without needing to replace the entire arch. They secure to your jaw with the help of a discreet metal clasp and gum-colored base, so nobody will know they’re not your “real” teeth!

Full Dentures

Full dentures work by adhering to your jaw with the help of natural suction. The base is custom fitted to secure comfortably over your gums, so not only do they look like the real thing, but they also stay in place and function like natural teeth, too.

Implant Dentures

Implant dentures are a hybrid of both dentures and dental implants. If you’d like to replace an entire arch with a more permanent option, these prosthetics stay in place via dental implants. However, instead of each tooth having its own implant post, implant dentures secure by just a few posts that attach the entire prosthetic (including the gum base) to your arch. They’re not only more durable, they’re also easier to clean and won’t shift or fall out while you’re eating or speaking.

The Benefits of Dentures

Because your dentures aren’t a one-size-fits-all prosthetic, nor is the process of getting them. Your journey begins with a consultation with Dr. Sandadi, where you will learn your options, including cost and care details.

Dentures are designed to look just like your natural teeth and gums, all the while restoring your ability to eat a healthy, well-balanced diet. This doesn’t just benefit your oral health, but your overall health too.

Dentures can make you look younger by keeping your cheeks from looking sunken or hollow, and because they’re lower priced than other restoration methods, they’re better for your budget, too.

Finally, dentures are easy to care for. They must be brushed and flossed daily and removed to soak each night, but require no special tools to keep them looking their best.
