All the things people love most about Thanksgiving—eating tasty food and catching up with family—are made even better if you can do them with healthy teeth. That’s why this holiday season, it would be good to show those pearly whites that you appreciate them. Thanksgiving dinner can present some serious hazards to your oral health, but preventing them from harming your teeth just means a few changes to your lifestyle. Here are some things you can do to show your teeth some thanks this November.

Go Wild on Turkey

Everyone has their favorite Thanksgiving dish. Some of them, however, can be a feast for the bacteria in the mouth. Most people are aware of the hazards of sticky sweets, but starchy foods like stuffing and mashed potatoes can be just as much of a problem. Both carbs and sweets coat the entire mouth, feeding the bacteria that live there. Those bacteria secrete acids that contribute to tooth decay.

Turkey, however, is wonderful for your teeth. Not only is it free from sugars and starches, it’s also rich in tooth-healthy phosphorous. On top of all that, it’s delicious! If you want to show your teeth some love, skip the stuffing and go all in on turkey.

Stay Hydrated

Red wine is common at the thanksgiving dinner table, but remember to pair it with a tall glass of water. Having a bit too much to drink can make you dehydrated, which can disrupt the generation of saliva in the mouth. Saliva ordinarily carries food particles into the stomach, so having less of it than usual will mean food sticking to your teeth longer than they should. Wine also contains a compound called tannin, which actually blocks off your salivary glands. It’s fine to have a few drinks, but you should be sure to stay hydrated while you do.

Pack a Dental Hygiene Kit

Traveling for the holidays presents a host of logistical challenges; in the midst of all the chaos, the last thing you want to think about is brushing your teeth. Preparing a travel dental kit beforehand is an effective way to make maintaining your dental hygiene routine easy. These can be bought at any supermarket, or you can make one yourself containing your favorite products.

Showing appreciation for your teeth this year will ensure that you’re still feeling good after the holidays are over. Making a few changes can keep you smiling this Thanksgiving, and at every Thanksgiving to come.
